Apologies Australian style

Scott Johnson, the Wales' assistant coach who will take up an observational role on the Lions tour to New Zealand, became embroiled in controversy when he referred to New Zealand as a "poxy island in the Pacific" before Wales' November clash with the All Blacks.

He then said he wished to make an apology as the conversation was a private one and he was overheard. This was his apology:

"I wasn't misquoted. I just got it slightly wrong. I actually said in the quote, 'it's a poxy little island in the Pacific'. I do apologise to all New Zealanders when in fact, it's two islands."

As apologies go that's one Blair might like to mimic when 'apologising' to his Iraq critics for getting rid of Saddam Hussein..

He got it a lot wrong - apart from the South Island and the North Island (hiss), Stewart Island and the Chatham Islands are inhabited. There are also the Antipodes Islands, Auckland Islands, Bounty Islands, Campbell Island and the Kermadec Islands. When he hears the patter of little webbed and clawed feet behind him, he'll know he's being hunted down by a posse of angry penguins seeking redress.
